How Player Habits Are Changing in 2026

Players are moving between sportsbook and casino more freely than ever. The forces driving that shift have evolved, as have the ways live game shows, RNG formats, and gamification shape engagement across verticals.

When I compare player behaviour across our portfolio today with two or three years ago, the biggest shift is that players are far less defined by a single vertical. It used to be easier to think in terms of a ‘sports bettor’ or a ‘casino player’. Today those boundaries are increasingly blurred.

Players are much more comfortable moving between different forms of entertainment within the same session, particularly when the experience feels familiar and intuitive. For sports bettors, that often means gravitating towards live, fast-paced games that share characteristics they already enjoy in sportsbook: anticipation, clear outcomes, short betting cycles and the sense of following an event as it unfolds.

Mobile has accelerated this behaviour and changed player expectations. They want entertainment that is immediate, easy to understand and able to fit into shorter, more fluid sessions. That creates a real opportunity for formats that sit between traditional verticals.

Consistency over seasonality

What made this change stand out was its consistency. Crossover activity used to spike around major sporting events or promotional periods. We began to see players engage across different game types regularly and sustainably, regardless of the calendar.

Games that combine fast betting cycles, simple decisions, live presentation and clear outcomes have been particularly effective at bridging the gap. Mobile has reinforced this, with players expecting to move quickly between experiences without changing how they interact. That consistency was the clearest indication of a broader shift in how players consume betting entertainment.

What crossover players are looking for

Our data shows a growing appetite for fast-moving, easy-to-understand experiences that appeal to both sportsbook and casino audiences. The crossover has always been relevant to BetGames. Live game-show formats and complementary RNG experiences provide a natural bridge between the two verticals, combining simple betting mechanics with the pace, presentation and entertainment value players now expect.

The evolution of our Skyward range reflects this, from Skyward and Skyward Deluxe to, more recently, Skyward Storm. This newest iteration introduces new features and greater variety into a fast-play format, creating more moments of engagement while keeping the simple, intuitive mechanics that make these games accessible. This is where the crossover opportunity is strongest: products that give players speed and immediacy, and give operators content that engages audiences across both verticals.

Gamification built on progression

Gamification works best when it gives players a clear sense of progression and recognition. Leaderboards, challenges, and competitive mechanics can all be effective, and the most valuable approach acknowledges continued engagement and gives players a reason to return.

That thinking is behind our gamification tool Hero, which enables operators to recognise and reward player loyalty through engaging mechanics built around the core game. It makes loyalty more interactive and rewarding for players, and gives operators the flexibility to build longer-term engagement around the behaviours and experiences that resonate with their audience.

Game shows and live casino

Player appetite has shifted towards experiences that combine the atmosphere of live casino with the accessibility and entertainment value of a game show. Traditional live casino remains important, and alongside it we see strong demand for formats that are faster, visually engaging and easy to understand, offering entertainment beyond the outcome of an individual bet.

We see significant potential here and continue to invest in game-show-led experiences built on strong hosts, engaging mechanics and innovative features. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, which is why we invest across our whole portfolio, but game shows remain popular with a good proportion of recreational bettors looking for a short entertainment experience.

Mobile as the default

Mobile is the dominant channel, and desktop usage continues to fall. We take a mobile-first approach to all game development, which is especially important for user interfaces and for optimising gameplay in markets where players typically use smaller devices. The Skyward series is built around fast play, simple interaction and instant entertainment that works naturally on mobile.

The player of the future

In two or three years, the typical player will be increasingly difficult to define by a single vertical. We expect players to move freely between sportsbook, casino, live and fast-game experiences, choosing content based on the entertainment they want in the moment. Mobile-first, intuitive gameplay and immediate engagement will be baseline expectations.

For operators, this means thinking about engagement across the whole ecosystem. For BetGames, it means continuing to develop content that combines simplicity and fast-paced mechanics with strong entertainment, gamification and innovation, so it feels relevant whether a player arrives from sportsbook or casino. The future player will be more fluid, and successful products will need to be just as flexible.
