Superbet Becomes Second Operator to File Brazil Betting Application
Superbet entered the market in 2023 by appointing ex-Betano Brazil country manager Alexandre Fonseca to lead its local operations.
The Romanian-headquartered operator joins Betano among the official applicants, just over a month before the government closes its 90-day preference window. Operators applying within this initial 90-day period, established by the Ministry of Finance’s Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) in May, will have priority in the licensing process and are assured of securing a license by the anticipated market launch date of January 1, 2025.
Superbet entered the market in 2023 by appointing ex-Betano Brazil country manager Alexandre Fonseca to lead its local operations. It later signed an agreement to implement Bragg Gaming Group’s iGaming aggregation platform into its Brazil offering and secured sponsorships with three local football clubs. Fonseca expressed ambitious plans to expand the brand’s presence in a market then dominated by local operators. He told Games Magazine Brazil in September 2023 that he expected Superbet to gain a reasonable market share but emphasized the importance of local knowledge for success.
Is this the start of the application rush?
The publication of Normative Ordinance 827 in the Official Diary of the Union on May 21 triggered the opening of the country’s online betting licensing window. Kaizen submitted their application shortly after the launch, but almost 50 days later, the register remains sparse with just two operators listed.
Industry stakeholders, however, expect a surge of applications once final regulations are published later this month. Hugo Baungartner, CCO of Aposta Ganha, believes that the latest ordinance will provide clarity regarding certain games, encouraging more operators to apply.
“They’re ensuring that labs approved for the Brazilian market know exactly how to certify the games included in the ordinance,” Baungartner told iGB earlier this month.
Despite a slow start, Udo Seckelmann, head of gambling & crypto at Bichara e Motta Advogados, predicts that up to 60 operators will file applications by the end of August.
